my new hobby

I've had a bit of spare time on my hands (where it says "a bit" read "a lot") as I'm getting established as a supply teacher here. I've been wanting to do some screenprinting for a long time now and so I figured, what better time to start. I did my first major run yesterday and documented it for you.

My fancy apron.

The screen that I burned crooked.

Making the print.

Voila!

This is about half of the run that I did. There was a set of red that I did as well.

That is awesome Katherine! They look fabulous really~ new hobbies are so exciting. Don't worry about the crooked screen, my first scarf for Neil still feels more like a pot holder than anything.... practice makes perfect.

That is so cool! What are you going to do with them now? Where did you get the print to burn? Very curious and also love new hobbies.

As someone with four years of experience working as a screen printer (16 hours a week during high school, and full time in the summer), I would like to offer you my expertise if you encounter any problems.

Like all good advice, this advice is free (and unsolicited?), though, I will expect a print for every piece of advice given.

Thanks for the positive feedback guys!
Grace, I adapted the picture from a brocade pattern that I found on some wallpaper.
Aaron, I made need some advice once I get into two colour patterns. I learned about flooding the screen after my first trial run. They came out a lot better once I did that.

I love it! nice work - i wish i was in Ottawa so I could learn the trade from you in my "little bit" of spare time ;)
however, i did just start a pottery course yesterday - so i suppose that counts as a new hobby, even if all my pinch pots turned into woks.

I want to learn how to do that. It looks awesome, Joanna, I also wanted to do a pottery class but they were all booked here. We three girls should form a stay at home lazy :) wives club and give eachother internet advice on hobbies. Our friend Michaelia is also at home in New York, is really would be a worldwide meeting.

That sounds good to me! I've been fighting boredom and figured that at least if I'm doing it through a creative outlet at least I'd be productive. I like the sounds of a stay-at-home wives club. It could be a support group of sorts!

yes - i'm so in on the lazy wives' club - exchanging hobby ideas and good music and generally inspiring one another...
we can even exchange good reading materials on how to encourage our husbands and stay looking fresh for them when they arrive home and such ;)

Great idea Joanna! Lately I have really been neglecting myself in the makeup area, thanks for the gentle reminder. :) Kylie

Hi, Kylie told me that there is a lazy wives' club starting. I'm in. In my 2 months at home, I've managed to knit a pair of slippers and buy a lot of things from Target. I'm not very creative, but I do like to read (and spend my husband's hard-earned money). My husband has started to complain that I wear the same green lounge pants everyday. I see no problem in this, as I do wash them!

So MIchaelia your lounge pants are green hey? Mine are grey. Here's to a lazy-wives club. Perhaps we should start a blog that we can each post to. Would that work as a forum?

Mine are grey too! I actually have several pairs that are getting quite worn in. K
PS I put a comment responding to your comment on our blog.
